Your Education and Support, Not Your White Guilt

We are all racist. Let's face it, our systems and our humanity are not perfect. Not by any stretch. It's what we do with this information that makes all the difference.

I've been seeing and hearing about a lot of white people expressing shame and guilt over what is and has been happening to black people. This, while good to acknowledge, isn't what we need right now. Sure, I'm all sorts of ashamed and guilty of my privileges as a white woman. But what I find far more important than lamenting is to embrace my need for education, making a stand and moving with the changes black people need in the world. And I wholeheartedly agree that black people shouldn't hold the burden of educating us on how or why we should change. That's on us, white people.

I am working towards a long overdue education in all the ways that our white privileges and the systems we grew up with have supported white silence and ignorance. It's uncomfortable, but I've learned that growth and change really only come through discomfort.

Let's get out there and get uncomfortable! Let's make unprecedented changes to our society, culture and government! Let's educate ourselves and stop being complacent! Let us stand and move for Black Lives Matter!
